Performance portfolio : Matthew James McKay

This folio brings together four projects that are representative of the practice-basedactivities I have undertaken while studying for the DMA.My first studio recording project aims to demonstrate how the flute can be used toreinterpret a vocal line in the context of a modern deep funk track. My wider agendais to demonstrate the ways in which the flute can become an integral element in thecreation of a signature sound for the deep funk 1 outfit Speedometer.The second studio recording project is a suite that I commissioned, written bycomposer Rob Neild; this Suite for Flute entitled Meet at the Grey Horse exploresmany of the different tone colours available to the flautist. I also featured my work onpiccolo, alto flute, Native American flute and Didgeridoo. Parts of the piece requireextended techniques and employ novel recording and performance methods usingfound sounds and production techniques more commonly adopted in electroacousticmusic. The suite also features stylistic elements derived from funk edgedAmerican saxophone features such as those by Tom Scott, here providing a newvehicle for the solo flute. The significance of this work is supported in the form ofreviews from world-renowned flautists and educators.The third project is a live, filmed recording, and features flute with tenor saxophone,trumpet, trombone and rhythm section. This Latin styled piece was recorded as partof the successful Guards Chapel Recital Series in London. The lead line, originallywritten for alto saxophone, has been taken by the flute on the world premiere of apiece entitled M.B.C. written by Paul Clarke. Also included is a studio recording ofthis piece where, using multi-tracking, the flute plays all parts of the composition.The final project included in the folio, Groove from the Joint, was written by Dr RobinDewhurst and its premiere live performance, which was filmed at the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall, showcases, for the first time in the U.K, the GlissandoHeadjoint® invented by American designer and academic Dr Robert Dick.This written report consists of critical commentary on each of the four projectsexplaining the aim of each recording. This is followed by reviews and evidence of liveperformances and studio sessions during my candidature.This folio brings together four of my performances employing a full controlled flutesound, extended techniques, stylistic innovation and technological development atthe front of original compositions, arrangements, recordings and performances;breaking new ground right across my sound world.
