An implementation roadmap for knowledge sharing for small and micro companies (SMC) in Ireland

Knowledge is the prime source of competitive advantage among small and microconstruction consultancy companies (SMCCC) in Ireland today. The context andstructure of the thesis is presented and explained. The literature review will discuss how acompany can marshal its staff and company knowledge. A knowledge sharing (KS)environment must be gradually developed and "grown" within a company. This researchfocuses on developing an implementation roadmap for KS in SMCCC in Ireland.The areas of KS that are focused on in this research are:The appropriate meaning of "Knowledge Sharing" in the construction industry.Specific issues relevant to Small and Micro companies in the context of KnowledgeSharing.The circumstances that should prevail to allow people to share knowledge.Effective methods of facilitating company learning and how can they be developed.Technology's effect on knowledge sharing in a company.Each of these areas is addressed through a critical literature review and primary research. Ahybrid research methodology was applied in gathering the primary research. The researchtools used were questionnaires, interviews and model review.The analysis and discussion of the KS issues are based on the literature and the empirical datacompleted. Each of the above research areas are analysed and discussed under four broadheadings, namely: culture, personal resource, facilitating KS and IT. The culmination of theresearch is presented in the KS roadmap. The conclusions and recommendations proposedfrom this research are also presented. The contribution to knowledge achieved by thisresearch is the establishment of a yard stick to measure future research in this field and thedevelopment of a strategic KS roadmap to facilitate implementing the process of KS inSMCCC in Ireland. SMCCC were selected because of a lack of research undertaken on thisparticular sector of the industry.
