An investigation of the role of internet artworks in formulating a new communication model in the Internet

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The 'Internet Arts' are a new field that has emerged from the new mediarevolution. There are many works in this field that are unique, creative and singularin relation to their concept and practice, especially concerning the humancommunication aspect. The emulations and experimentations in communication bythe internet artists' works are now generating new and unexpected communicationparadigms. However, the scholars in the communication field have declared that the currentclassical communication models are not adequate in reflecting the communicationprocess within the field of this new media. Also, because the internet artworks areimbedded in this new media field, these models are not sufficient to reflect thecommunication process within them. Therefore, the main aim of this thesis is toidentify a new communication model that will have the ability to express thecommunication process within internet artworks. The research approach consists of four main steps. Firstly: extract what can beused from relevant theories to provide a suitable solid basis on which to build thenew model. Secondly: combining the relevant theories' output with that of the pilotcase study, to formulate an initial proposed model. Thirdly: an applied qualitativemulti-analysis generated from seven case studies. Fourthly: an analysis of theseoutputs from the research methods, in order to make the final version of themodel. The initial results indicate that there are non-linear levels within the communicationprocess, and that the internet artist is considering the technological system as apart of the artwork, rather than as a medium to convey its theme. Furthermore, theuser is aware of the technological system's role that is combined with artwork, andthey are generally not expecting the artists to deconstruct this in theircommunication through their artwork. It is hoped that the answers derived fromthese analyses will provide significant knowledge to fill the theoretical gap betweenthe communication science and the internet arts fields, and moreover increase theinternet artists' awareness of the communication model implications of theirartwork.
