Eficacia de un programa de entrenamiento fisico y cognitivo basado en nuevas tecnologias en poblacion mayor saludable y con signos de deterioro cognitivo leve: Long Lasting Memories

Abstract

[EN]Introduction. Long Lasting Memories (LLM) is an international project supported by the European Union, aimed at the validation of an ICT platform that combines cognitive exercises with physical activity through new technologies. The objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the platform LLM in improving cognitive function, depressive symptoms and subjective memory complaints in healthy older adults with no signs of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Method. Included 267 older adults (mean age = 75.8 ± 8.6) from nine nursing homes and two community centers (n = 156 experimental, n control = 111) from different locations in Spain. The experimental group received one hour of physical training and cognitive training 40 minutes three times per week for 12 weeks. At the beginning and end of the program both groups were assessed using a battery of cognitive tests. Results: After applying the LLM program significant improvements were observed in the experimental group and control group difference in global cognition (p <.04), verbal memory, delayed recall subpuebas (p <0.0001) and total recall (p <.001), episodic memory (p <.001), processing speed (p <.05), attention (p <.001), depressive symptoms (p <.001) and subjective memory complaints (p < .001). The greatest improvements were seen in healthy community population unlike institutionalized population with signs of deterioration respectively. Age and cognitive activity conducted prior to the start of the program were presented as major predictors of outcome in most cognitive tests and treatment efficacy. Discussion: The LLM platform is a promising solution for the improvement of cognitive functions and welfare in Spanish elderly population with and without signs of cognitive decline, with few technical requirements and profesionales.La importance of this research lies mainly in that, to date , we found no other studies in the Spanish population to assess the utility of the integration of physical and cognitive training through new technologies in larger population with and without impairment. This research creates new knowledge that could help develop effective intervention strategies for this population.
