Transforming domestic violence organizations : collaborating with 2SLGBTQI+ communities

This critical action-oriented study explored the inquiry question: How might FearIsNotLove create accessible domestic violence services for Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and additional sexually and gender diverse (2SLGBTQI+) communities? Leaders of antiviolence organizations and self-identified 2SLGBTQI+ individuals with lived experience took part in semistructured interviews, producing qualitative data. The findings indicated 2SLGBTQI+ individuals’ experience of violence is unique and there are significant barriers to access service. The findings suggest that antiviolence organizations need to expand their theories of violence and plan for change processes to permeate the entire organization. Inquiry recommendations support an organizational change project with dedicated resources to maintain focus and momentum. A planned, strategic change process for FearIsNotLove that includes partnering with 2SLGBTQI+ individuals and communities is recommended for long-lasting success.
