Classroom management: a study in leadership, theory, and implementation

The purpose of this study is to review the literature, identify components of a classroom management plan, and implement the research into practice to study the effects of implementing a classroom management plan. There will be three action research cycles that drive this case study. The case study starts by studying the effects of implementing a classroom management plan with 18 teachers in Generic Township High School. Utilizing the research, key components have been identified: procedures, rules, hierarchy of negative consequences, and the importance of positive reinforcement and communication home. This study is both qualitative and quantitative in nature. Qualitatively, the participants were observed and interviewed in order to gauge effectiveness from their vantage point. Quantitatively, data on teacher discipline referrals were collected by marking period and analyzed. Surveys were utilized in the data collection. If classroom management plans are necessary to provide structure and improve learning, then it is important to identify the effective components of classroom management plans and to most effectively implement them. This study's findings suggest that implementing a classroom management plan positively impacts classroom behavior in regards to classroom disruptions.
