Space Escalator

Monuments create common public spaces that contribute to the collective interest. Stations and terminals can become spatial monuments when they are organized around nodes of transport infrastructure and there is easy passage between them. Public transit facilities extend into cities when their hollow innards are transposed onto their external forms, and when the boundaries between their insides and outsides are porous. A transit system is as good as its touch between its regions and neighborhoods, and a transit hub is as good as its touch between its stations, its common space and its immediate vicinity. The Space Escalator is a multi-modal transit hub for Seattle, serving an existing rapid bus station (located under and above ground), an underground light rail, and a new gondola station. Its ambition is to create a Commons out of the gateway between these tubes of transit and the city they serve.
