SYMPHONY. (ORIGINAL COMPOSITION)

SYMPHONY is a musical composition for large orchestra. It is in one movement of approximately twenty-three minutes duration. The form of the work is a fusion of multi-movement symphonic procedures with the single-movement sonata principle of contrasting thematic material. The work is in four large sections plus an introduction and coda. Each section presents a unique perspective of the thematic ideas, although all are intimately related through the use of the same material. All of the melodic and harmonic materials of the work are derived from a cluster of alternating major thirds and minor seconds. This generative set remains constant through the course of the entire work, although individual motives are extensively developed and varied. Certain symmetrical characteristics inherent in the thematic ideas are delineated through the orchestration of harmonies and melodic ideas. The introduction and first section expose the materials which are then varied in the following two sections (the second of which is a "scherzo-fugue" derived from the generative set). All of the materials are reprised and combined in the fourth large division of the composition. The final coda recalls the opening introduction and closes the work. Symphony is scored for large orchestra consisting of: 3 flutes (3rd piccolo), 3 oboes (3rd english horn), 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, contra-bassoon, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, percussion (3 players), timpani, harp, and strings.
