Of particular interest were the herbicides likely to contaminate water courses used for potable water supplies in Grampian Region. Laboratory based simulation experiments were set up to determine the removal of chlorphenoxyalkanoic acid, substituted urea and benzonitrile herbicides from freshwaters. These simulation experiments included filtration using various natural materials (sand, clay and peat) and artificial adsorbents (activated carbon and Fullers earth), jar tests using alum to simulate coagulation and flocculation processes, and chlorination.
