Fluid-structural interaction effects on vibrations of pipework.

dc:description.abstractThis thesis presents the details of a study into the vibratory behaviour of structural pipework and investigates the modal responses. The emphasis of this study has been focused on assessing the effects that a fluid has upon the vibratory characteristics of the system concerned. The work elicits both theoretical and experimental investigations into the previously mentioned systems. After considering the physics of the systems involved, and making careful assumptions, mathematical models of the systems were constructed. Accordingly, theoretical simulations were performed and various results were procured by the variational method. The effects of fluid upon the vibratory characteristics of the pipe system are assessed, mainly under three sections; the natural frequency, the damping ratio and the vibration patterns. To appraise the effect of the fluid on the natural frequencies, fluid-pipe interactions are formulated with extensions from single phase flows to two phase annular flows. The equivalence of the annular flow to the single phase is discussed. With reference to the experimental findings, the fluid damping effect is investigated. Related damping theories are examined and new damping models are established. On the subject of the vibration pattern, the fluid effect is identified by theoretical simulations. As a means of verifying the theoretical results, experimental modal analysis techniques were utilized for rendering reliable results for comparison. The main findings and conclusions drawn from comparisons of the theoretical study and the pipe vibration test results acquired using the modal analysis techniques, are also presented.
