The study was a quantitative, cross-sectional study involving 220 participants aged 18–29, 53.6% female. Data was collected with an online questionnaire consisting of items assessing background, attitudes towards hookups, hookup experiences, alcohol use and an adapted, translated version of the Hookup Motives Questionnaire (HMQ). The HMQ is a standardized questionnaire assessing five motivational categories related to hookup participation: enhancement, coping, conformity, social-sexual, and relationship motives. Results showed that 65.9% of participants had engaged in hookups at some point in their lives, and most participants considered hookups a normal part of Icelandic culture. Enhancement was the main motivator among those who had participated in a hookup. Alcohol was strongly associated with hookups, with 95.2% of participants who had engaged in a hookup reporting alcohol use in at least one experience, and 61.4% stated that alcohol was present during their last hookup. This study contributes to the limited research on hookup culture in Iceland and has potential practical value for sex education and further research.
