The role of family accommodation in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety disorders : a preliminary evaluation of psychometric properties of the Icelandic translation of FAS, FASA, and FASA-CR

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Family accommodation (FA) is recognized as an important factor in the maintenance of pediatric anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Icelandic translations of the Family Accommodation Scale (FAS), the Family Accommodation Scale–Anxiety (FASA), and the Family Accommodation Scale–Anxiety Child Rated (FASA-CR). A cross-sectional design was used with a clinical sample of 22 children and adolescents receiving treatment at a tertiary psychiatric hospital. Participants and their parents completed the FAS, FASA, FASA- CR and other symptom measures. The results demonstrated excellent internal consistency for all three scales. Correlations between accommodation scores and measures of anxiety and OCD symptom severity were modest or nonsignificant. Gender emerged as a significant predictor of family accommodation, with boys showing higher reported levels. Moderate agreement was found between parent- and child-reported accommodation. These findings support the reliability of the Icelandic translations and emphasize the need for further validation studies using larger samples and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to examine the scales’ structural validity.
