Patient satisfaction with treatment at early intervention services for bipolar disorder in Iceland : a cross-sectional study

Bipolar disorder presents a unique treatment challenge due to the complex interplay between mania and depression phases, often accompanied by high suicide risks and significant functional impairment. This research aimed to assess patient satisfaction with early intervention treatment provided by the bipolar disorder team at Landspítali (e. The National University Hospital of Iceland), with the primary objective to enhance patient-centred care and improve the service. The research question addressed patient perception of treatment effectiveness, with four hypothesis predicting that: (1) Patients are generally satisfied with their treatment at Landspítali, (2) Patients with bipolar I are more satisfied with their treatment compared to those with bipolar II, (3) Patients who score significantly above the clinical threshold on scales for anxiety, depression, work and social adjustment, and quality of life, are the least satisfied with their treatment. (4) Patients consider the treatment for the manic phase more effective compared to the treatment of the depression phase. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted, with 45 eligible participants (N = 45). Data were collected via an electronic self-report questionnaire, developed by healthcare professionals, using REDCap. Statistical analyses were conducted using Jamovi. Results showed high overall satisfaction, with no significant differences across illness phase or diagnostic subtype. Notably, anxiety was the only indicator affecting patient satisfaction in a negative correlation. These findings suggest that patients receiving early intervention treatment for bipolar disorder at Landspítali are generally satisfied with their care across multiple aspects of treatment. Future research should apply longitudinal designs and include a larger number of participants.
