Changes in stress among Icelandic university students following a global pandemic.

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Following the end of the global pandemic of COVID-19 researchers have tried to assess the effects of the pandemic on mental health. Studies have found that stress among students increased during the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences. Therefore, this study aimed to examine these changes among Icelandic university students, as well as, whether age and gender played a role in the changes. The study utilized data from ongoing research where data was collected in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Stress levels were measured with the PSS-10 scale and then compared using an univariate ANCOVA. Results showed that contrary to previous research, stress levels did not change in a significant matter during the pandemic. Further, age did not affect the change in stress levels but gender did. Thus, it is possible to conclude that though stress levels of Icelandic students did not change significantly during the pandemic, gender played a role in students’ stress. However, the study is limited as different samples were used to compare stress levels between years. Further research is needed to examine the relationship between COVID-19 and stress among Icelandic university students. Keywords: Stress, COVID-19, Students, Gender Differences, University
