Social media´s impact on jealousy and insecurity in romantic relationships
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe purpose of this study was to explore whether social media affects jealousy and insecurity in romantic relationships. There were 367 participants, which were selected by voluntary response sampling. A questionnaire was put up to measure the connection between social media usage, jealousy, and insecurity. There were four hypotheses put forward in this study. The results supported hypothesis 1 since women had a higher level of jealousy and insecurity overall. Hypothesis 2 was not supported since more frequent use of social media did not result in individuals displaying more jealousy or insecurity. Hypothesis 3 was supported since the findings showed that individuals who had ended a previous relationship due to something that occurred on or was related to social media are more likely to be jealous. Hypothesis 4 was supported since bisexual individuals showed greater levels of jealousy and insecurity compared to people with other sexual orientations. This study provides a good insight into the effects of social media on romantic relationships. More research on this topic could be important to find ways to improve the quality of romantic relationships with the rise of social media. Keywords: Insecurity, jealousy, social media, romantic relationships
