Many adolescents do not follow sleep recommendations, which can contribute to mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression. Caffeine is one of the factors that can disrupt sleep and has been linked to mental health problems as well. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate whether there was a relationship between sleep quality, caffeine consumption, and mental health among 195 Icelandic adolescents, as well as if caffeine consumption mediated the relationship between sleep quality and mental health. Correlation and mediation analyses were used. Results showed a significant relationship between sleep quality and depression as well as between sleep quality and anxiety, with worse sleep quality resulting in more depression and anxiety. There was a non-significant relationship between sleep quality and caffeine consumption. Caffeine did not have a significant relationship with anxiety or depression. According to the findings, caffeine consumption did not mediate the relationship between sleep quality and depression, nor did it mediate the relationship between sleep quality and anxiety. It was therefore concluded that sleep affects adolescents' mental health, but caffeine consumption does not.
