Exploring the relationship between Tinder usage and body-image, self-esteem and self-objectification
Abstract
dc:description.abstractPrevious studies are inconsistent on whether or not dating app usage positively or negatively affects users self-esteem, body image and self-objectification with varied results. Therefore the aim of this study is to examine whether Tinder usage negatively affects users self-esteem, body image and self-objectification. Furthermore, to examine the possible gender differences that could be present. This current study was conducted in January to March 2022 using an anonymous online survey. In total, 427 participants answered the survey of whom 185 were active Tinder users and 242 non-users. Pearson correlation and two separate independent sample t-test were performed to test the relationship between Tinder usage and self-esteem, body image and self-objectification. Main results showed that users have significantly lower self-esteem and higher body image concerns than non-users. Furthermore, that female users have higher body image concerns and sexually-objectify more than male users. Correlation results indicate that with more frequent use of Tinder self-esteem levels get worse and body image concern levels rise. Possible explanations for inconsistent results are discussed and future studies are recommended. Keywords: online dating apps, Tinder, self-esteem, body image, self-objectification, gender
