Social cognition in individuals with psychosis and healthy individuals

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The primary goal of the study was to examine one factor of social cognition, Theory of Mind (ToM), using the Hinting Task. The first aim of the study was to investigate ToM abilities among healthy individuals and analyse by gender, age, and education. The second aim was to compare ToM abilities among the healthy individuals (control group) and a patient group which included individuals with psychosis. The participants were 307 (174 men and 131 women). The main findings showed that women scored higher on the Hinting Task than men. No significant difference was found in ToM by age nor education among healthy individuals. Results also demonstrated that individuals in the control group scored significantly higher on the Hinting Task. The results support the findings of previous studies in this field which show that psychosis is related to impaired social cognition. Strength of the study, limitations and future research are outlined in the discussion section.
