Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe aim of this study was to examine, compare and contrast the practices of coaching and psychotherapy as they are practiced today, in order to reveal possible overlapping and differentiating factors. To the author’s best knowledge, this is the first study of its kind and the first study to compare coaching and therapy in Iceland. The participants consisted of 37 International Coach Federation (ICF) certified coaches and 92 therapists in Iceland. Two preparation interviews were conducted with one coach and one therapist in order to develop the questionnaire that served as the tool of measure. Prior research demonstrates inconsistent views on the differences and similarities between coaching and therapy. The main findings of this study reveal that goal setting may relate as much to therapy as it does to coaching, that therapists may not focus on the past as much as previously believed, and that coaching may go more in-depth than to simply focus on success and set goals with the clients.
