La notion d’interculturel en traduction
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis thesis explores the concept of interculturality in translation, focusing on cultural nuances in the translation from French to English of letters and memoranda from three Oblate documents relating to residential schools in Canada. Considering that residential schools are generally viewed as institutions of cultural assimilation and colonial oppression, translating archival texts from these institutions poses significant challenges due to their cultural, historical and emotional weight. Drawing on Chen Ling's theory of negotiating meaning across cultures, this study examines the ways in which cultural and ideological contexts shape translation decisions. This research analyzes the difficulties encountered in intercultural translation and proposes strategies for bridging the linguistic and cultural gaps in the original texts. By examining existing works, this thesis explores different authors' perspectives on translation challenges, their insights into possible solutions and the strategies they propose to overcome the difficulties encountered during translation. The main approaches identified for overcoming these cultural challenges are cultural adaptation, localization, translator's notes, cultural equivalents and the possibility of referring to documents in the source language. The results indicate that these strategies are effective in ensuring translation accuracy and cultural relevance. Finally, this study highlights the transformative role of translation in promoting intercultural understanding. Keywords : Savage, Oblates, Indigenous, Translation, Intercultural
