As one of these stars ages and swells, gas can flow from one star to the other. This exchange of matter often determines the future fate of both stars: sometimes this process is gradual and stable, sometimes the system becomes disrupted and the stars may even merge. In my thesis, I investigate when such mass transfer remains stable, when it becomes unstable, and what visible traces this leaves behind. To do this, I combine detailed computer models of stars with simulations of large populations of binary stars. My results show that the classical, simplified rules often used by astronomers do not always accurately predict the behaviour of real stars. Mass transfer appears in many cases to proceed more stably than thought, but under certain conditions to spiral out of control more rapidly. I also show that many white dwarfs that now appear to be solitary likely originated from earlier mergers of binary stars. In addition, I predict changes in brightness and colour that may serve as a warning that a system is on the verge of becoming unstable. This research therefore helps us to better understand binary stars and to recognise such processes in future observations.","Radboud University, 11 juni 2026","Promotor : Pols, O.R.
