However, the participation of European Muslims, is politicized by Islamophobia and anti (Muslim) migration sentiments. In political and popular discourse a negative link is assumed between Islamic religiosity and political participation, but we actually know very little about how Islamic religiosity connects to political participation for European Muslims. Upon the backdrop of the high political salience of Islam in Europe, this dissertation asks the question: does Islamic religiosity shape the political participation for European Muslims and if so, how? By combining insights from the sociology of religion and Islamic studies with political behavior literature an improved theoretical framework is provided as well as a richer empirical understanding surrounding the electoral participation of religious minorities. Methodologically both quantitative and qualitative methods are applied revealing that Islam is not simply linked either positively or negatively with participation but this can depend on which religious dimension you are considering, which forms of participation and can differ for men, women and between generations. In conclusion Islamic religiosity cannot be assumed to be anti-democratic. On the contrary, many Muslims find inspiration from their faith to be involved in society and to participate politically.","Radboud University, 28 januari 2026","Promotor : Spierings, N.
