When this information processing does not work properly, all kinds of diseases can arise, including cancer. Information processing in cells occurs via networks of signalling proteins that can activate each other. In my thesis, I investigated how B cells, which are very important cells in the immune system, process different types of information via the B cell signalling network. I discovered that B cells are sensitive to the speed at which a signal increases. When I administered an activating signal more slowly, the cells responded at a lower concentration than when I administered the same signal more quickly or all at once. I also discovered that drugs can inhibit different parts of the signalling network, depending on which part of the network is more active in that type of B-cell cancer. In addition, I found that a combination of three drugs, each at a low concentration, inhibited the B-cell signalling network more effectively than a high concentration of a single drug. This research has given us more insight into how B cells process information, molecular signals, from their environment via the B-cell signalling network, and how the initial state of the network influences information processing.","Radboud University, 16 september 2025","Promotor : Huck, W.T.S.
