This research shows that certain inflammatory substances, like IL-6 and TNF, are elevated in FSHD patients and are linked to disease severity. Immune cells, such as Natural Killer (NK) cells, are also activated. While it was previously thought that FSHD could be caused by autoimmune reactions, no specific autoantibodies were found. Additionally, FSHD muscles show signs of inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and disruptions in muscle repair. A key finding is that an MRI feature (TIRM+) strongly correlates with inflammation, which may aid diagnosis and treatment.
