Yet, public expressions of emotions and feelings regarding this loss remain sparse. Loss of species and landscapes tends to be approached through numbers and graphs instead. ‘Attending to more-than-human life and loss’ moves away from this quantitative focus, by zooming in on the affects (feelings and emotions) experienced in relation to nature. In doing so, this thesis focuses on citizen scientists who share observations of flora and fauna through digital platforms such as the Dutch Waarneming.nl. How do such platforms mediate affective experiences of citizen scientists with more-than-humans (at loss) and the expressions thereof? This interdisciplinary research combines insights from cultural studies and socio-ecological theories and uses reflective analyses, ethnographic interviews and other qualitative methods to show that platforms such as Waarneming.nl have (at least) a triple function: as data collection tools, as motivators of affective nature experiences, and as archives to remember nature (experiences). Moreover, these platforms mediate affective experiences with more-than-humans by motivating users to pay attention to the world around them, which leads to affective encounters with other species and care for nature. Based on this, theoretical and practical implications emerge such as reflections on a more multifaceted conceptualisation of ‘attentiveness’, and recommendations around the integration of functionalities that not only motivate affective experiences but also the sharing thereof.","Radboud University, 08 mei 2025","Promotores : Born, R.J.G. van den, Aarts, M.N.C.
