Understandably, this leads to concerns among parents and educators, because seeing risk behaviour in the media can contribute to positive views of this behaviour. However, young people do not blindly copy what they see. This depends on whether they find the images realistic, and whether they identify with the characters. For this reason, this dissertation not only focuses on how risk behaviour is portrayed in popular media, but also on what teenagers themselves think of it. How do they view these films, series and videos? And what role do parents and friends play in shaping their interpretations, whether critical or not? The studies show that risk behaviour is common in popular media. Teenagers are aware of this and are quite critical of it, but sometimes overestimate their own media wisdom. It also became clear that risk behaviour in the media is rarely discussed with parents and friends, even though this has the potential to contribute to more critical interpretations. This is also made difficult by the expectations of teenagers with regard to entertainment media: they should primarily ... entertain them. As a result, programmes do not necessarily invite teenagers to reflect critically. This means that there is a role for scientists, educators, parents and adolescents themselves to continue to engage in critical discussions about risky behaviour in the media and beyond.","Radboud University, 19 maart 2025","Promotores : Buijzen, M.A., Rozendaal, E.
