This question, posed by van Kempen in the article, Too Poor to be Green Consumers (2009: 2160), is relevant in many places and is especially poignant in Mount Elgon National Park (MENP) in Uganda. This Park is located in Eastern Uganda and is bisected by the Uganda-Kenya border. It is a Protected Area with a high prevalence of environmental conflict. This study is an in-depth investigation of the effects of conservation in Mount Elgon National Park on the livelihoods of Park adjacent communities, and how those communities affect conservation efforts. The research seeks to find the truth about conservation and solutions to the prevailing environmental conflicts. MENP is a protected area with a strict exclusionary regime implemented by the Uganda Wildlife Authority to protect and preserve the flora and fauna in the Park, the ecosystem, and its water catchment potential. While conservation has noble intentions and should halt the degradation of the National Park, the reality is that Mount Elgon National Park has shrunk in size by over 25,000 hectares.","Radboud University, 16 december 2024","Promotor : Hoebink, P.R.J.
