Two main topics are addressed, namely the development and application of laser spectroscopic techniques for flame diagnostics, and the influence of nitrogen addition on the flame and diamond layer properties. Flame diagnostics were performed with laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and cavity ring down spectroscopy (CRDS). Before the work of this thesis, the latter had not been used before for measurements in an atmospheric diamond chemical vapour deposition (CVD) reactor. CRDS was applied to measure CH, CN and excited state C2 concentrations. In the first chapter a general overview of the thesis is given and the position of the research in the literature is marked. The second chapter describes the deposition set-up, the applied gas phase diagnostic techniques and solid-state techniques used for diamond characterization. Chapter 3 and 4 present CRDS measurements of CH and excited state C2 distributions, respectively, the latter being measured in a freely burning oxyacetylene flame without a substrate. Chapters 5 up to 8 deal with the influence of nitrogen on flame CVD of diamond. In chapter 5 the influence of nitrogen on the properties of deposited diamond layers is examined by micro-Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and energy-resolved cathodoluminescence. Interpretation of the measurements, aided by the results of previous experiments, yielded interesting results. In situ distributions of the CN radical in the diamond-depositing flame, measured with LIF, as a function of molecular nitrogen addition, are presented in chapters 6 and 7, together with solid-state analysis of the diamond samples. The measurements suggest a possible role of the CN radical in the influence of nitrogen on the diamond properties. Chapter 8 presents CRDS measurements of the CN radical, the results of which are compared with those of chapter 6 and 7 and of numerical simulations of the flame.","XIV, 162 p."]},{"key":"dc:title","label":"Title","values":["Flame deposition of diamond : gas phase diagnostics and the effects of nitrogen addition"]}]}],"canonical_facts":{"dc:creator":["Stolk, Robert Leendert"],"dc:date":["2002"],"dc:description":["Contains fulltext : 19317_flamdeofd.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)","This thesis presents research on oxyacetylene flame deposition of diamond.
