The rapid development of individualized therapy for cancer patients has led to an increased interest in tumor subtypes. Currently, colorectal cancer patients are treated in the same way irrespective of the cellular aspect of the tumor. It appears that the tumor subtype is relevant for prediction of prognosis and efficacy of therapy. The research in this thesis analyzes the role of the mucinous subtype that is found in one in every eight colorectal cancer patients. This research illustrates that mucinous tumors have a distinct molecular background. Contrary to previous thoughts, patients with these tumors appear to have a good prognosis when treated with adjuvant chemotherapy. However, prognosis is poorer compared with the common subtype when chemotherapeutic treatment is given for metastatic disease. The pattern of metastatic spread is also different for mucinous tumors when compared with the common subtype of colorectal cancer. Results from this thesis emphasize the relevance of the tumor subtype for determination of prognosis and for evaluation of therapy.","Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, 07 januari 2016","Promotores : Wilt, J.H.W. de, Nagtegaal, I.D."]},{"key":"dc:title","label":"Title","values":["Clinical and biological aspects of mucinous colorectal cancer"]}]}],"canonical_facts":{"dc:contributor":["Wilt, J.H.W. de","Nagtegaal, I.D."],"dc:creator":["Hugen, N."],"dc:date":["2016"],"dc:description":["Contains fulltext : 150224.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)","In the Netherlands approximately 5% of all people will develop colorectal cancer during his or her life.
