A critical dialogue between the missiology of Lesslie Newbigin and the emerging understanding of mission with the Prebyterian Church in Ireland

This research sets up a critical dialogue between the missiology of Lesslie Newbigin and the emerging understanding of Mission in the Presbyterian Church in Ireland (PCI). PCI’s response to its rapidly changing context is examined through its official documents and interviews with key informants. The changes in context are similar to those of other churches within the United Kingdom, with the added dimension the legacy of conflict in Northern Ireland. Having identified the outlines of PCI’s emerging understanding of mission, the missiology of Lesslie Newbigin is introduced in a role comparable to that of a mentor for PCI. Key themes in Newbigin’s missiology are identified and utilised to evaluate PCI’s emerging view and to propose further development of it.
