Looking Behind the Scenes. The History of the Royal Court Theatre Through the Lens of Prominent Productions

An investigative study of newly released archive material representing six decades of Royal Court Theatre history including analyses of the productions of John Osborne’s Look Back in Anger, Edward Bond’s Early Morning, Caryl Churchill’s Cloud Nine, Jim Allen’s Perdition, Sarah Kane’s Blasted, and debbie tucker green’s Stoning Mary. Sixty years after the first season of the English Stage Company was launched at the Royal Court Theatre there is no theatre maker and theatre scholar in the world who has not heard of this first writer’s theatre in Britain: it famously put the angry young Jimmy Porter on stage, it helped put an end to stage censorship in Britain and has through the years been one of the most important engines for new writing in the English speaking world. The who-is-who of British playwrighting started off, visited or ended up at “the most important theatre in Europe” (New York Times). But no matter how big the names attached to a theatre are, it is the everyday battles of budgets, politics and compromises that really are a theatre’s history. Like a detective story, this first independent study of the Royal Court delves deep into the newly opened Royal Court Archives to fully bring to light some of the most controversial decisions, struggles and compromises that shaped the Royal Court.
