Resistance and transcendence : trombone improvisation, structure and creative risk taking

Abstract

dc:description

It is proposed that this research has produced significant original insights in respect of how different types of experiential stimuli affect creative risk taking based on the subjective experiences of a trombone improviser which, in this case, ultimately transcend any and all forms of structural considerations. Central to this thesis is the notion of inherent resistance to structural considerations based on the subjective experiential considerations of the trombone improvisor. This thesis works within the context of such resistances and seeks to challenge, sonically, such structural considerations. The work also investigates sonically, how subjective experiences can create profound creative risk taking in the context of subjective sound improvisation. The research utilises different spaces, media and is a result of the trombone improviser, subjectively challenging himself to interrogate the subjective experiential in order to find out whether the subjective experiential transcends all structural considerations. Thus, revealing significant insights into how the trombone improviser responds to the subjective experiential through sound works. This research has developed a series of processes through which the trombone improviser seeks to challenge structural considerations based on the subjective experiential. The processes developed in an organic, transformative way and form a core part of this practice based research. This research also enhances the body of knowledge in respect of sound improvisation practice and the role of the subjective experiential in creative risk taking involving sound improvisation. This research provides huge scope for academics and practitioners to continue to research and explore how the subjective experiential affects creative risk taking across related disciplines and seeks to challenge academics and practitioners to explore this evolving area of study.
