Poetry, practice & potential : a heuristic inquiry into the potential of poetry for the reflexive coaching practitioner

This study explores the relationship between poetry and reflexivity to support the development of professional coaching practice. The primary methodology was Heuristic Inquiry, working with co-researchers through two rounds of interviews, emails and phone calls to consider personal experience of using poetry to develop reflexive practice. Heuristic Self Search Inquiry has also been used to review researcher poetry, written over a three-year period. Embracing HI supported by HSSI acknowledges considerations of role tension between I-researcher and I-participant whilst enriching experience and learning. Data was analysed using thematic analysis to identify patterns on reflexivity and the potential use of poetry in its practice. Writing poetry emerges as a source of reflexive support for the coach practitioner, enabling access to unconscious and prescient ideas in responding to and influencing next steps, acting as an emotional release and facilitating insight, learning and selfcare. Whilst the benefits of writing poetry or engaging with a more creative writing approach are acknowledged, poetry is not a creative choice for everyone since the research indicates it is personally demanding. The importance of a clear appreciation of reflexivity and its contribution to self-care, personal growth and ethical practice emerges from the research. The role of reflexivity as an ongoing practice with accountability for personal approach and application, resides with the coach. The value of the coach practitioner engaging with reflexive practice is rooted in concerns about awareness and accountability for self-leadership, whilst addressing potential limitations to personal growth, considering options and proactively optimising supervision.
