Student protest in France, 1986-1999 : an interpretation using theories of protest and social movements

This thesis explores the nature and significance of student protest in France between 1986 and 1999 by drawing on theories of protest and social movements. The thesis provides a historical account of seven episodes of student protest in upper-secondary and higher education that is based on empirical research, newspaper sources and archival documents. The account of the student protests is then analysed in light of concepts and classifications of protest and social movements, with the aim of identifying an appropriatedefinition for the protests.
