Mechanisms of Trust in Indigenous Tourism: A Study of the Pataxó Jaqueira Community in Porto Seguro, Brazil.
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe involvement of various indigenous communities around the world in tourism has created new dynamics. The implementation and management of indigenous tourism have helped communities take control over their tourism resources and decisions; whilst others tend to be managed by powerful tourism players and dominated by conflicts of interests. Thus, this study explores the role of interpersonal, social and political trust among key stakeholders in indigenous tourism in the making of partnerships and relationships in the Pataxó Jaqueira community, situated in the city of Porto Seguro in the south of Bahia in Brazil. The study provides a historical analysis of colonial and postcolonial events revealing the interplays of power, mistrust and trust concerning indigenous peoples and particularly the Pataxó people. The analysis and discussion provide contextualised and historically-informed, socio-cultural insights regarding the intersections of self-determination, gender, trust and traditions in the context of indigenous tourism implementation and management. The discussion examines toward the mechanisms of trust shaped by intention, belief, behaviour and disposition to build, sustain and undermine trust in the making of commercial relations between the Jaqueira community and local tour operators. The study further discusses and analyses the complexity of indigenous tourism policy process and relations between the Jaqueira community and the local Council in determining the role of political trust. The study contributes to understanding the role of trust in indigenous tourism implementation and management and makes future research recommendations.
