Antisemitism in British football : examining good practice in anti-discrimination educational initiatives

Antisemitism, which adversely impacts Jewish communities worldwide, manifests in various forms, from verbal abuse and social discrimination to physical violence and even genocide. Antisemitism has been documented in European football stadiums, where antisemitic chants, symbols, and slurs have been directed at fans of specifi c teams. While numerous initiatives in sports address issues of inequality and discrimination, relatively few have focused specifi cally on combating antisemitism. Given the rise of antisemitism in the UK, it is crucial to better understand this societal issue and propose eff ective prevention measures. This project followed a multi-phased approach consisting of four stages of data collection. The fi rst phase involved conducting semi-structured interviews with experts skilled in developing anti-discrimination programmes (n=14). Using thematic analysis, key themes were identifi ed, leading to the development of an educational initiative during Phase 2, incorporating a ‘creative non-fi ction’ (CNF) methodological approach to use sport as a medium for educating individuals about antisemitism. In the third phase, focus groups were held with anti-discrimination experts, teachers, and members of the Jewish community to gain insight into their perspectives on the fi rst draft of the initiative (n=25). Based on their feedback, the initiative was revised accordingly. Finally, the fourth phase involved a ‘book review’ with experts in antisemitism education or Jewish studies to further refi ne and fi nalise the initiative (n=6). This project makes a novel contribution by integrating the emerging theory of HebCrit, which critically examines Jewish identity and experiences, and using ‘creative non-fi ction’ as an innovative approach to develop the educational initiative. By leveraging sport as a platform for combating antisemitism, the project off ers a unique, narrative-driven strategy to engage and educate young audiences. This approach not only addresses antisemitism in football but also contributes to broader eff orts to reduce discrimination in society through an impactful, theory-informed educational programme.
