Place making Under Occupation: Impacts of Segregation on Buildings Rhetoric. West Bank case studies
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe main aim of this research is to investigate the segregation mechanism in the West Bank and its impact on the Palestinian place making practices and to understand if some could be considered as possible expressions of resilience. The research question to be answered to was: “What are the effects of the occupation on the perception of space and place rhetoric by the Palestinians as well as on the way in which they shape their own space?” First, this study inscribes the complex set of structures and processes that have produced today’s reality in the West Bank in the frame of settler colonial tools of domination and control. Second, it focuses on place related theories in order to understand the social implications of Israeli territorial practices of segregation on Palestinian environments. Third, it uses the resilience lens to analyse the place making tools used to adapt to and transform that reality in three case studies. This research contributes to reducing the gap in knowledge about the role of heritage awareness and place making in resilient behaviours under colonization. Moreover, it also combines the subjects of settler colonization, place attachment and resilience, and brings another point of view to these topics, which attract scholars from various disciplines. By framing its findings within the existing literature and by pointing at some new developments based on these, this study opens the way to further research on the role of heritage, place making and resilience under occupation.
