Rock inhabiting and deteriorating fungi from carbonate monuments of Persepolis
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe problem of the deterioration of monuments made of rock is particularly relevant in countries like Iran being rich in such cultural heritage. By using LM, SEM, Thin sections, PAS staining, maceration, culturing and molecular techniques different biodeteriorative agents were identified on and in the stone materials of Persepolis monuments in Iran. Biopitting, crumbling, chipping and etching were the main destructive phenomena observed on persepolis samples. Our results show that the abundance and variety of isolated rock-inhabiting fungal species were less than expected. To control and prevent the development of biodeteriogenic organisms growing on and in monuments made of rock, it is necessary to assay biocidal activity before applying the chemicals to artefacts. For this reason, the efficiency of some chemicals to inhibit biofilm growth was assayed in in vitro experiments by two methods; plate count agar and fluorometry. During this work the fluorometric technique was improved and elaborated to assay the efficiency of chemicals on rock fungi.
