Temperature impact on reproduction and development of congener marine copepods: a key to distribution patterns?

dc:description.abstractThe life cycles of four copepod species of the genera Temora and Centropages, which differentiate in their geographical and/or seasonal distribution patterns, were investigated particularly with regard to temperature effects on population dynamics and distribution. In the field, reproduction was determined at two stations in the North Sea and the Mediterranean over several years. In the laboratory, survival, reproduction and embryonic development were studied in a temperature gradient at both locations. Cohorts were raised to examine temperature-dependent stage duration. In both regions, seasonal reproductive patterns of different species were similar, contrasting different life cycle and abundance patterns. Experimental thermal tolerance limits and optima of demographic parameters distinguished the northern from the southern species, while C. typicus, inhabiting both regions, was intermediate and able to tolerate different thermal regimes, resulting in a wide geographic distribution.
