Successful female farmers in natural resource management

Aim of this study is to analyse strategies of successful farming couples resp. successful female farmers in the frame of three projects for a sustainable management of natural resources in East-Africa against the background of the increasing destruction of natural resources (soil, vegetation and water); within this context, special attention is paid to the identification of success-indicators under integration of gender aspects. A further aspect integrated is the analysis and comparison of the different project approaches. These aims are put into praxis through applying a qualitative approach and different methods; however, central stands the method of participant observation, but also quantitative elements like structured expert interviews are integrated. Not only shall solution strategies and concepts of projects in the frame of a sustainable management of natural resources be improved and methods be evaluated concerning their practicability, but it is the aim to lay a bridge across social and physical geography who still stand separately next to each other without having forged links in a sustainable way. Consequently, this study is based on a trans- and multidisciplinary, multifaceted and multidimensional approach; it is, in fact, the attempt to demonstrate that it is possible - and a necessity - to fruitfully combine various disciplines.
