The results of this thesis were obtained within two independent projects with different industry partners each applying principally different processing technologies. In samples from (1) the sequential deposition-reaction process the sulfur composition of the annealing atmosphere was varied in order to realize a double band gap grading. (2) Devices from different co-evaporation chambers processed under nominal equal conditions yielded strong deviations in performance. A comprehensive characterization procedure was devised and applied in order to strategically identify the loss mechanisms in the solar cells.
