Temporal and spatial aspects of hearing as revealed by auditory evoked potentials

dc:description.abstractIn the present thesis the influence of realistic spatial acoustic stimuli on the generation of auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) was investigated. An optimized chirp stimulus was used, yielding responses with an improved signal-to-noise ratio. Using this stimulus, in Chap. 2 brainstem responses were shown to be not primarily evoked by stimulus onset or offset, as is still discussed in the literature. In Chap. 3 and 4 a virtual acoustics paradigm resulting in realistic spatial stimuli is utilized. The dependence of sound direction on the AEPs is investigated. The results indicate that sound azimuth is encoded at all levels of the auditory pathway up to the generators producing the late AEPs and the mismatch negativity components. Influences of sound elevation are only weakly and not systematically reflected in the potentials and the response amplitudes to externalized stimuli are not higher than those to non-spatial stimuli. To this end, the results cannot give evidence for a specific externalization detector or localization detector for the investigated stages of the auditory pathway.
