The Exploration of Signed Language Interpreters’ Practices and Commitments with a Social Justice Lens

Abstract

dc:description

This paper uses a mixed methods approach to investigate through a social justice lens the relationships between signed language interpreters’ practices and their commitments toward those practices. Leadership drives practices, and by applying social justice theory to their roles, interpreters may be able to develop the necessary transformational leadership skills to effectively negotiate practices within a new Third Space where involved participants may better understand each other despite disparate languages and cultures. Possession of transformational leadership traits leads interpreters to redirect their course in the Third Space, permitting Deaf members to guide professionals’ roles, thus promoting social justice.
