Analysis of Fate and Transport of E. coli in Chlorinated Drinking Water Distribution System in the Presence of Natural Organic Matter

<p>Contamination of drinking water distribution systems can affect the public health adversely. Intentional intrusion of contaminants into the drinking water distribution systems have been a growing concern. In order to protect the public health, an effort is made to answer the need for improvising the prediction of the survival and transport of chemicals within a drinking water distribution system.</p><p>A multi-species model is developed to simulate the fate and transport of <i>Escherichia coli</i> bacteria in the distribution system, incorporating inactivation by chlorine and chlorine loss through interaction with organic matter. This multi-species model was developed based on laboratory studies of <i>Escherichia coli</i> bacteria in a nutrient broth and chlorinated water solution. </p><p>Survival of the <i>Escherichia coli</i> bacteria is estimated without considering the influence of natural organic matter in the chlorinated water. Also a relative influence on the survival of the <i>Escherichia coli</i> bacteria is analyzed, considering the interactions with natural organic matter. The results obtained from this thesis show the importance of consideration of natural organic matter for analysis of biological contaminants fate and transport in the drinking water distribution systems.</p>
