A Custom Reflectance Goniometer and its Usage in the Development of Gain Reflectors for Electronic-Paper Applications

Abstract

dc:description

A modified goniometer has been successfully developed and used to characterize novel electronic-paper (e-paper) devices. A power meter, in conjunction with a DC servo motor, was controlled within a Labview program to automate the collection of data reflected light off of e-paper substrates. Next, aluminum gain reflectors were fabricated and tested. Master molds were used to create daughters which were in turn laminated in Per-MX onto glass slides and then coated in aluminum. These substrates′ reflection profiles were characterized by the goniometer and ranked from most diffuse to least. Finally, a pixel display was developed on top of the most diffuse aluminum patterns and also tested on the goniometer. A Suspended Particle Display (SPD) liquid was diluted to an ideal concentration then placed between the aluminum pattern and a top transparent electrode. Test pixels were fabricated and shown to perform well with the reflector. Future work with the SPD will be in creating display devices similar to E-ink while the goniometer will remain a useful characterization tool for all types of e-paper devices.
