Employing UPS for Safe and Efficient Power Oversubscription in Data Centers
Abstract
dc:descriptionIt is significant for the profits of data centers to supply maximum power of servers within existing power supply capacities. Various power capping solutions have been recently proposed, a conservative assumption made by existing solutions is that peak power should never exceed the rated circuit breaker (CB) capacity. In this research, we propose to use uninterrupted power supply (UPS) as an energy storage unit to assist supply the server when the work load exceeds the rated capacity of CB. It can prevent the CB from tripping and increase the peak power capacity. We design a circuit to control when the server draws power from UPS and propose an idea that drawing UPS intermittently to limit the power consumption of UPS. We run the SPECjbb benchmark in our testbed and the result shows that with UPS the performance of the server can be improved at least 34.88%. We develop possible solution of reducing the power consumption of UPS, so that the UPS can supply the server with longer time or it can support more servers. Then we discuss the related UPS power shaving work and compare these methods with ours in order to solve the problem of control the amount of power draw from UPS. We propose a centralized cluster power controller with PDU level distributed UPS mechanism that can shave the extra server power on a server-group level. This method can solve the problem if transmits the original individual server level to the server- group level.
