Auto-commissioning and Resource Allocation Based Control of Smart Lights

Abstract

dc:description

The objective of this study was to design energy efficient lighting control techniques to obtain the desired lighting levels in different zones of a building despite variations in partition heights (like presence of cubicle structures) and external disturbances. First, a decentralized integral controller, that does not have any communication between the lights, is designed and implemented in the lighting test bed. But it failed to achieve uniform lighting when the cross-illumination effects were very high. To overcome this, a centralized resource allocation based control strategy, inspired by a very simple concept of juggling of balls, was implemented. It was found to be very effective even in cases with high cross-illuminations and was also found to consume a lower amount of energy than the decentralized approach. To deal with a practical case in most commercial buildings, in which there aremore lamps and fewer sensors (due to the high cost of sensors), an auto-commissioning algorithm is developed which dynamically groups the lamps and sensors and performs control based on the coupling in the system. It was found to be very effective in achieving the desired lighting levels for different configurations of the test bed.
