Abstract
dc:descriptionThis novel in verse, titled Dark Ride, is a coming-of-age story set in and around Gibsonton, Florida, a city established in 1949 as a winter home for carnival and circus showpeople. The collection engages with disability studies through the lens of the protagonist—a young woman named Emanuela—and highlights themes of inward and outward gaze, the development of emotional and sexual identity, and the human and the animal. Individual poems describe Emanuela’s life in Gibsonton (“Gibtown”) and her position with a travelling carnival.
