Abstract
dc:descriptionThe risk that carrying poses for the spine has not yet been fully explored. Previous studies have either examined carrying’s effect on physiologic measures or have examined vary narrow sections of the spine using biomechanical models. Additionally, most studies have tested a limited selection of carrying styles. This study analyzed forces imposed on the lumbar spines of 16 subjects while performing 6 styles of carrying at 2 weight levels and 2 levels of motion. The results indicated that loads carried in front of the body induced significant anterior-posterior (A/P) shear force on the spine whileseveral carrying styles produced spine loads indistinguishable from that seen while carrying nothing at all. Optimal methods of carrying position loads close to the body tominimize moment arms and spine loading.
