Trends In Music Therapy Since Unification: A Review of the American Music Therapy Association’s National Conference Proceedings 1998-2011
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe current state of an organization is reflected by what is presented at its national conferences. Analysis of conference proceedings has not only provided valuable information about an organization but also implies future direction. The purpose of this study was to analyze information in the 1998-2011 American Music Therapy Association National Conference proceedings for prevalent categories and trends. A total of 2450 presentations, titles and abstracts, were examined with the use of content analysis methodology regarding types of presentations, topics discussed, and educational background of presenters. Results indicated that (1) the majority of presentations were clinical reports averaging at 88% in 14 years, (2) an upward trend in topics discussed from issues related to populations and ages of served clients to that of professional issues after 2007, and (3) the Master’s degree became the most prevalent level of education among presenters after 2004, followed by Bachelor’s degree and then the Doctoral degree. It is noted that there was an increase in the percentage of presenters with Doctoral degrees after 2009 while that of presenters with Bachelor’s degrees declined. Recommendations for future study include investigating further if the results of this study reflect the present view of music therapy practice.
